Sun Marine Kesennuma Hotel Kanyo

Dinner was very good, and breakfast was better than what I've had at most hotels in the same price range around the country. The hotel is old, but comfortable. The smoking situation was awful. There are no non-smoking rooms, and both our room and the room of the couple traveling with us smelled strongly of cigarettes. The hallways and elevators did too. It seemed like smoking was allowed everywhere except the lobby. Really disgusting.

The rooms have tatami and futon beds, and the accommodation is fairly modest. The decor is a little dated, but it's a decent place to stay. The onsen has indoor and outdoor baths, and its salty water comes from the water table being so close to the ocean, which was a novel experience. The food was okay, with lots of fresh seafood. The staff were accommodating, and there's a small gift shop.

The meals, featuring Kesenumma seafood traditions, were delicious. The onsen is spacious, and I especially liked the outdoor hot bath. The staff were friendly, and there are drawers on each floor with all the yukata sizes, which makes it much easier to find the right fit. The hotel is just a few minutes from the Shark Museum.

My first time trying a salt water onsen. The indoor bath is pleasant and looks out over the harbour, while the outdoor one wasn't very hot and has no view. The entrance to the onsen is really nice. It costs 800 yen, which felt a little expensive.
