The dinner includes local pork hotpot and fresh sashimi, and the rooms look out over beautiful nature. I especially liked the outdoor onsen, with its view of the tall grass. Riding the train to the bath was fun, with scenery to enjoy on the way up and down. Some foreign visitors come here, and it can get noisy at times.

The public bath was hard to relax in because a loud group treated it like a meeting room, and no staff were around to manage them. Meals were disappointing too. The sashimi and shrimp were extremely dry, as if they'd been left out too long, and the tempura was worse than at an average local restaurant. Service during dinner was poor: nobody offered water or checked on us, and the gaps between courses were far too long. I never felt looked after. The tableware was shocking, with peeling paint on spoons and dishes and what looked like mold. At nearly ¥110,000 a night for two adults and one child, for two nights, that was unacceptable. At check-in the staff seemed unprofessional and showed little warmth or willingness to help. They watched while I struggled with heavy luggage. I expected the quality I experienced at KAI Yufuin two years ago, but this stay was disappointing in nearly every way. I left with regret instead of the comfort and hospitality I had hoped for. This was one of my worst stays in Japan, and I hope future guests read this before booking. I don't think the property is worth the price.

The meals were a letdown, especially considering the price, so this wasn't the full package. Still, the setting is incredible, with beautiful views from the room, public onsen, and viewing galleries, plus a private onsen. I'd come back for the views alone if I return.

The room and onsen were beautiful, with an incredible view. We booked partly because they offer vegetarian kaiseki, and the dinner was delicious. But there's only one vegetarian menu, so during a two-night stay you'd have the exact same meal both times. At this price, that's very disappointing.
