Breakfast bread and coffee were delicious, though even in the morning the owner talked a lot, mostly bragging about his daughter. I wish we could’ve eaten quietly, at least then. The place was a new, clean family pension, and the local vegetables and corn in the quite tasty dinner were apparently used. But it was hard to focus on the meal because the owner kept talking. It felt a bit like listening to a boss brag nonstop, with topics like his daughter being a professional skier and where he’d take his grandchildren on summer vacation. My husband and I responded seriously, so he seemed to focus on us. The family at the large table didn’t engage with him at all. I wondered if it was okay to keep talking while people were eating, and whether I was the only one who thought he should talk less. The other table seemed to mostly ignore him. In the end, it’s probably best to ignore him, though it’s a pain. Dinner seemed to be the same as what someone described four years ago. I think water may have been the only drink available. Someone at another table ordered beer, but I think the request was refused. There was no refrigerator in the room, either. It wasn’t a bad inn overall, but the owner’s talk put me off and I won’t return.

The food portions were just right, and everything was tasty. Our room was spacious, clean, and tidy. The owner was quite chatty, which made for a fun time, and I really respect his passion and attitude toward his work. Our family of four had a comfortable stay at a great price thanks to the Shinshu discount. Maybe because the grandchildren live in the building, infection control was being handled strictly. I’d stay again if I get the chance.

It may not suit someone looking for a quiet stay, but for me it was a warm, homey pension and I’d gladly return. The owner was friendly and funny, with solid knowledge of skiing and wax. I used to ski until 20 years ago, and I learned a lot from him. He was especially considerate with waxing and discounts. The pension is run by the husband, wife, and daughter, and I met their adorable child. I’m raising a child around the same age, so it felt lively. This was my first time staying here while visiting Kaida Kogen Maia, and I had an absolutely great time. I didn’t have the experience some reviews described, and could see how it might be a matter of personal preference. I’ll definitely come back.

The bread the owner’s wife made was so good, I thought she could open a bakery. It was the best I’d eaten in the past year. They agreed right away when I asked for an early breakfast, and I’m grateful. The family bath wasn’t available, but the shower in our room had a seat, so we could wash off comfortably. The kids slept in the two beds, and my husband and I slept soundly on futons on the tatami. The place was clean, and the owner had taken care with infection prevention. My husband and I both enjoyed his stories. The place had a bit of a sports-club feel. I think people who are unhappy tend to write reviews more often than satisfied guests. I’ve personally received around 70,000 reviews online, so I think there’s something to that when reading harsh reviews. We had to stay overnight despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Our room had air conditioning, and we slept comfortably. I hope things get back to normal soon and Mitake Pension is busy with guests again. Thank you very much.
