My father, who’s 84, and my young daughter were left waiting in the lobby while my husband and I went to find the nearby restaurant we’d booked. It was a cold day. About 15 minutes later, we came back and found them shivering outside. They said the front desk staff had made them leave the lobby. My father thought the restaurant was inside the hotel, so he told the staff they were waiting for us to take them there. A female staff member had been watching them with an unfriendly expression, then sent a male colleague to ask whether they were hotel guests or waiting for one. When they explained, he said the coffee shop was closed and they had no reason to stay, then ushered them out. My father and daughter had been sitting quietly in an empty lobby. I was stunned by how arrogant the front desk staff seemed. I’ve always heard Japan is known for hospitality, and I’d never imagined something so disheartening could happen at a highly rated hotel. The hotel should train its staff to treat people with more politeness and compassion. They may not be guests today, but they could be someday. This isn’t how people should be treated in the service industry. I hope people can show a little kindness, especially to the elderly, children, and those in need.

The room was small, but clean and cute, with nice decor. Service was good too. The welcome drink came with cookies, and the breads and sweets at breakfast were delicious.
