Sujiyu Onsen Ryokan Furusato

We stayed here while climbing in the Kuju mountains. It was a weekday, so there were only three other groups, and with five different hot springs available, we had a truly luxurious time. The food was satisfying too, including country-style dishes with trout and tempura made from homegrown vegetables, along with the items shown in the photos. Since this is a family-run place, mainly by older women, guests may need to be patient and understanding.

That open-air bath right in front of the inn was my favorite. It was charming, just the right temperature, and we went in about three times. There are several private baths, including one with a view and a rock bath carved from a huge boulder, and we headed straight for them after arriving. Our room was spacious and spotless. Because of COVID-19, they were limiting stays to two groups on April 17th. Dinner had lots of seasonal wild vegetables and bamboo shoots. The spring kaiseki felt like a healthy reset, followed by a soak and a night in a fluffy futon. It was good value, and I’d like to come back.

There were six of us, and after climbing Mount Kuju we were glad to find such a comfortable, laid-back inn at an inexpensive price. The landlady’s cooking felt warm and personal, and there was so much food that it barely fit on the table. It was a real treat for big appetites. The facilities include an open-air bath, an indoor bath, and a dining room.

I visit Japan for hot spring trips three times a year, and this was the best place I’ve stayed. The owner was kind, the food was delicious, and the spring water was excellent. Soaking in a natural hot spring at 1,100 meters relieved all my fatigue, and my skin looked much better afterward.
