The room was my favorite part: spacious tatami floors, comfortable futons, and a beautiful private onsen. The food was delicious, made with healthy local ingredients and presented with care. Everyone on staff was so friendly and went out of their way to welcome us. We worried a bit about the language barrier since we don't speak Japanese, but there was no need. This is the most authentic ryokan experience we've had, and we'd love to return if we didn't live thousands of miles away.

We spent a night at this traditional Japanese guesthouse on a one-night, two-meal plan, with kaiseki dinner and breakfast. The service was excellent, as you'd expect from this kind of place, and the food was great. They served us in a private room. The semi-open private onsen was the highlight, and we enjoyed it twice a day. The room was comfortably sized for two Japanese sleeping mats with some room to move around. There are lots of different guesthouses in the hot spring area, but there isn't much to see nearby, so this stay is mainly for a relaxing night.

Set in what feels like a secluded part of Kyushu, this mountain ryokan has beautiful room decor and offers fine food and service. You get a private outdoor onsen in your quarters, plus a choice of two public baths. A fantastic spot for a couple's retreat.

Tucked away in the mountains, this cozy hot spring hotel has super friendly staff, really good traditional Japanese food, and a heavenly private bath in the room. Highly recommend.
