The room has air conditioning, and the neighborhood is quiet, though the ryokan itself has thin walls and poor insulation. The bathroom and toilet can get cold. I arrived a bit late after driving all day and taking a long detour because a mountain road was closed, but the owner understood and kindly waited for me.

The room had a big bed, desk, kettle, drinks, and a lock. I was on the first floor, so getting to the bathroom was easy, though it could have been cleaner. The ryokan is about seven minutes from the station, in a very quiet town. On a 15-minute walk at night I saw fewer than five cars and two people. When I set out around 9 pm, the owner hurried back, perhaps because he was concerned. He may live nearby or have just stepped out. He even went to the station looking for me, only to find my key in the door. Such a homely place, and he was lovely. The elderly owner welcomed me with persimmon slices, then offered me two more to take with me when I said they were delicious.

A quiet, beautiful town with a lovely feel to it, and a traditional Japanese house run by a very kind owner. The station is a short 10-15 minute walk away. This is the closest place to Koya san if you don't stay in Koya san itself.

A classic minshuku with no meals and no bathroom in the guest rooms. It gives you a glimpse of typical life in the Shouwa era. A handy starting point for hiking Chou-ishi-michi.

The place feels like staying in someone's home, so sounds carry between rooms. We liked that more personal experience, and it cost much less than staying around Koyasan. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The owner was kind and helpful: he drove us to a nearby onsen for a bath and dinner, helped us check the train schedule, and took us to the station the next morning. Breakfast sushi was provided. The bathroom and shower are shared with the owners. We had a great stay.
