Minshuku Kumejima Bekkan

When the ferries and planes were cancelled because of a typhoon, this place came to our rescue. It’s close to the ferry terminal and several restaurants and stores. We’re very grateful to Kuniyoshi-san (the owner?). He was incredibly nice, went out of his way to help, and was patient communicating with us. Our clean room was Japanese-style, with tatami flooring and futons. It had a washing machine, air conditioning, small fridge, electric kettle, TV, and private bathroom with a bathtub.

A lovely homestay, with air conditioning and a washing machine. The traditional Japanese cooking was great, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Restaurants and a convenience store are just a few minutes away on foot.

The food deserves special mention: it was delicious and wonderful, though the portions were huge, as the photo shows. I was here on business and stayed in the tatami room, Room 301. It wouldn’t be easy to work on a laptop there, and the bathroom fixtures are old. I’d recommend bringing your own toiletries, like shampoo and a toothbrush. The clean face and bath towels smelled nice.

I keep coming back here on long business trips. It’s a guesthouse, so the building and rooms aren’t luxurious, but the food is always tasty and there’s plenty of it. Breakfast and dinner are available if you ask, and lunch boxes can be had for an extra charge.
