Mr. Sawada, the manager, was so kind and helpful, and Mon took great care of us during meals. We had a fantastic stay at Hotel Togen. Our gorgeous Sangetsu room had its own open-air hot bath, and we also enjoyed the separate private bath. The food was great, and even though we don’t speak Japanese, we were able to communicate well with the staff. Everyone made us feel very welcome. I’d enthusiastically recommend it.

We travelled with a relative who was new to Japanese baths and didn’t want to bathe naked with strangers. That was no problem here: there are three small private baths you can walk into and lock, plus a beautiful outdoor bath you can book for a small fee. It was well worth it. The multi-course dinner was delicious, lovely to look at, and an experience on its own. We also liked having sake in the lounge, with its mountain and river view, free soft drinks, and coffee. The traditional Japanese room was spacious and immaculate, with even a massage chair, and the futons were comfortable. The staff were wonderful from the first message arranging pickup before we arrived, and some speak English. We couldn’t have had a better stay. It’s a great place to enjoy hot springs and a traditional Japanese inn on the way to Kanazawa.

We had a nice stay at Togen. I told the staff beforehand that it was my husband’s birthday, and they kindly offered to put a cake and candles in our room. The staff who spoke English and Mandarin made everything easy. Our Mandarin-speaking server at dinner was from Taiwan, and she was friendly and gave us helpful local information. The food was fresh and nice, the drinks bar had a wide selection at no charge, and the onsen was pleasant and plentiful during our Thursday stay.

The gorge view from the room was lovely, and I enjoyed tea while using the en-suite massage chair. The rooms are quite large. Sawada, the manager, was courteous and welcoming, and spoke great English. The setting, hospitality, and delicious food were all wonderful, with both private and public onsens indoors and outdoors to choose from. Dinner was one of the best meals of my trip, though there was so much of it that I was still full at breakfast. I’d love to come back in fall foliage season.
