The onsen town itself is nice, but I’d stay at a different hotel. Our room was dusty and dirty, and it wasn’t cleaned or turned over each day. The place is old and poorly maintained, and $300 a night through booking.com in May felt way overpriced.

There’s plenty to keep kids busy, including a big ball pit, an inflatable slide area, and an arcade. The buffet meals at breakfast and dinner were tasty too, and I especially liked their homemade apple pie.

I still think guests should be able to find out what an all-you-can-drink package includes, even if it isn’t expensive. When we asked in English at the buffet restaurant, the male staff member receiving guests seemed unable to speak or understand English. He kept saying he couldn’t speak Chinese and asked if we wanted beer, then started yelling at us. We were upset by how rude he was, and his behavior really ruined our holiday. The hotel is inexpensive for an “Onsen Hotel” and the food was fair, but foreigners should think twice before choosing it. I’ve never had such a bad experience in Japan. The room was old and not maintained at all, with many stains on the tatami floor that made it feel dirty.

They’ll hold your luggage for free, which was handy for exploring the gorge after checkout. The checkout itself was easy at a digital kiosk, though payment has to be made in cash. There was a good range of food at the dinner and breakfast buffets, which run in set time slots. The food was a little above average for a buffet. The onsen was nice, but the outdoor bath was tiny and felt exposed, sitting right below some balconies and in direct view from the convenience store across the way. It wasn’t a deal breaker. The hotel has seen better days but still has plenty to offer. Check-in was efficient, and the clerk was patient while I struggled with my limited Japanese as the only foreigner in this remote area. We managed to get through it.

Awful experience. It was dirty and smelled bad, and the food wasn’t good at all. I can’t believe a hotel like this exists in Japan, a country known for great service and cleanliness. The worst hotel I’ve stayed at in Japan.
