Kirishimaya Ryokan

The baths were our favorite part. We went several times over our two-night stay, and they were every bit as soothing as I’d hoped. The changing room had plenty of amenities, including hair dryers, lotion, and brushes. Our second-floor room was quiet and looked out over greenery. After we went out exploring in our yukata, the futons and cozy bedding had been set up for us when we returned. This is a fifth-generation family ryokan. We were welcomed warmly and shown around, including the manga room, piano, and baths. It’s a short walk to Yubatake, far enough away for a calmer atmosphere from the travelers and buses, though the hill up to the ryokan is steep. If you want a Western hotel with all the usual Western amenities, this may not suit you. But for a traditional, interesting, cozy ryokan run by the fourth and fifth-generation owners, it’s worth a look. We loved everything, especially the excellent onsen water and the ryokan’s rich history. It was a pleasure learning about it and talking with Mr. Yoshiaki. The owner was kind, attentive, and spoke good English. The location is great, though the ryokan is on a hill with a lovely view. Walking uphill could be difficult for older people. There’s a private parking lot.

The first time I used a Japanese bath was a great experience. The ryokan offers baths separated by gender as well as a private bathroom. Staff were friendly and gave helpful advice, and the room was clean and spacious with a really comfortable futon. A lovely traditional Ryokan stay, and I’d highly recommend it!

After three days of walking around Kusatsu with friends, this ryokan was just right for relaxing. The hot spring baths were amazing, like they could bring the dead back to life. The owners were incredibly kind and welcoming, and the service was outstanding. We were so happy with everything and truly enjoyed our stay. 🙂‍↕️🥰
