Kusatsu Onsen Eidaya

Simple, clean rooms and a well-run Onsen hotel. It’s in a great spot for visiting local attractions.

We felt at home at Kusatsu Onsen Eidaya, even though it was a bit pricier than other hotels. The clean, beautiful room and the caring staff made it feel completely worth it. We can confidently say it was the best hotel we stayed at in all of Japan. Our modern, very clean room was on two storeys and had its own private onsen. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the blankets kept us snug and warm. After nearly three weeks traveling around Japan and staying in many hotels, we had one of our best sleeps here. The main reception area has a more traditional feel and leads to three more private onsens. Couples and families can use them when the door is open. There’s also a common room with old-school games or a heater to sit beside. Dinner and breakfast came with our stay, and we loved both. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the warm service and care put into preparing the meals really came through. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with friendly smiles. The staff also spoke very good English, a pleasant surprise after staying in hotels where English was quite limited. A special thank you to the woman who served us at checkout, whose name we unfortunately didn’t get. She asked if we had a car for our next destination, and when we said no, offered to drive us or take our luggage there. It was snowing quite a bit that morning, so her help meant a lot to us. If we’d known how good our stay would be, we would have gladly stayed another night or so. Thank you so much!

Our room was surprisingly modern and stylish, even though the common areas had a charming retro feel. We stayed downstairs in a room with our own onsen and bathroom, and the private onsens open to all guests were just as nice. The staff were incredibly friendly, and breakfast was delicious. This was definitely the best part of our Kusatsu trip, and we wished we’d booked more nights. 100% would recommend. Thanks, Eidaya 🙏

The private onsen was unfortunately too hot. We spent about an hour trying to get into the bath, but couldn’t manage it. Even so, I loved Eidaya’s beautiful, cozy room and nostalgic feel. We only stayed one night, but I’d recommend it to others, especially if you don’t mind a bit of a walk to the main Kusatsu area. It was also really quiet. The lady kindly carried our luggage upstairs and explained how to get to Jomo Kogen, where we’d rented the car. Thank you.
