The sea at Shotenkyo beach was warm and gently wavy, nice for kids to play in, and the open-air onsen looked out over Kumihama’s blue water. At night we could see stars and even some crabs from the bath. Our Japanese-style room faced Kumihama Bay, with a view that made us feel like we’d stepped into a movie whenever we entered. The whole hotel had a wonderfully calm holiday feel. We spent four nights at Hekisui Gyoen and were always well looked after. We had no car, but the cheerful staff drove us to the beach and Kumihama town whenever we wanted. At dinner, a lovely server looked after us, and the sashimi was the freshest we’ve ever had. The kaiseki meals were delicious and generous, and we left full every time. We also got several yukatas: one for the onsen with a haori, and a colored one for walking around. We tried at least six while searching for the right size, and the staff helped us patiently and without any fuss. We loved staying here and would come back if we get the chance.

The staff were so warm and helpful, even though we didn’t speak much of the language. I didn’t catch their names, but they made us feel welcome. Such a lovely place to stay, and I’d happily come back.

The breakfast setting was lovely, and the food was good too. Hekisuigoyen has a comfortable feel and a great location, and you can watch the stars while soaking in the onsen at night. A tip for a nearby visit: Inaba Honke at 3102 Kumihamachō, Kyotango, Kyoto 629-3410. Try the traditional Japanese O-ha-gi, also known as BoDa mochi.
