The staff at the AMZ were incredible. We hit some rough patches in Kyoto, but they more than made up for them. I exhausted myself and came down with a fever, and when I missed our breakfast time, they sent food up with my wife. Later that morning we realized I'd left my passport in the room safe. The staff coordinated with our travel agency to ship it to our final stop in Tokyo. The food was amazing, and the team made everything feel effortless. Its location beside Gion's art and antiquities district also makes it a must-stay. My wife even found a nearby shop making handbags from obi fabric over 100 years old. For a truly warm Japanese hospitality experience, I'd pick this hotel over the “5-star” places around Gion any day. It felt like real luxury.

We had a wonderful five-night stay and would recommend this hotel to any Kyoto visitor. The staff were gracious, eager to help and beyond compare. Dinner needs to be arranged ahead of time, and the concierge worked with us and the excellent chef to plan a meal we'll always remember. Our corner room was spacious and luxurious in every detail, including beautiful antique art. The location is ideal, on a quiet street in charming Gion near restaurants and shops, two blocks from the river and an easy walk from many temples and other attractions. As close to a perfect hotel as I've experienced.

The rooms are so spacious, with the biggest, comfiest bed. Service lived up to every part of the hotel. It's right off Gion's busy area, so it's convenient but still quiet. Highly recommend!

The included breakfast was served like a five-course meal, with soup, salad and dessert, and the menu changed each day. We also had a very impressive dinner at the hotel. Service was warm and accommodating, and the staff even knew our names. They helped send our luggage to the next hotel and arranged an upscale limousine to Kyoto station. The location is handy, on a quiet little street lined with antique, porcelain and art stores, beside a larger-than-average convenience store. It's a five-minute walk to Sanjo Keihan-mae Station and ten minutes to Hanamikoji Street and Yasaka shrine. We booked a corner double with floor-to-ceiling windows. It was large and airy, with lots of light but not much of a view. Inside were a counter, cafe table, sofa, two-person Jacuzzi tub, separate shower and counter area, and a toilet in its own room with a sink. The room was absolutely quiet, and had switch-operated blackout or sheer curtains. The details throughout were astounding, from carved wood floors and antique pottery in an art installation to a beautiful burled wood counter and ambient lighting. Beds were very comfortable, with four pillows each. Nice touches included parisian onmisens soaps, german Ronnefeldt and Japanese teas, bose ceiling mounted speakers and Xtal lamps. It really felt like a five-star property. I'd happily stay again if I return to Kyoto, and recommend it.

We were amazed by how huge and soft the beds were. Two adults and two little kids fit comfortably in one, just for fun. I didn't even know beds that size existed. The rooms are spacious and feel far more luxurious than I expected, with art that's 5,000 years old. The concierge was incredibly helpful with arranging trips, restaurants, and plenty of other things. The hotel is about a five-minute walk from Sanyo station, handy for getting around Kyoto, and close to the river, great restaurants, and Kyu Mizudera, one of Kyoto's best shrines. They serve a delicious Western-style breakfast and British afternoon tea on weekends. We loved our stay.
