There are several baths, each with a different style and temperature, so there was more variety than I expected from a local sento. It gets busy at times, but things stay orderly and regulars and visitors use the facilities together without any friction. The water and facilities feel well used, not luxurious. Funaoka Onsen has a lot of history in its building, from the detailed decorations to the slightly worn feel that gives it character. It isn’t modern, but it does feel authentic and tied to everyday Kyoto life. You come here for the atmosphere and tradition rather than the usual comforts or refinements of a spa. It’s a good fit if you want to experience a more local, unpolished side of Kyoto.

I only had an hour before closing on a public holiday, and wished I could have stayed longer. The outdoor pools were heavenly, and the wood carvings were magical. Bring your own towel, soap, and toiletries for washing. They allow tattoos, which is a godsend for those of us who want to relax at sentos in Japan. Thank you, I’ll definitely be back!

The atmosphere is really relaxing, with different kinds of hot springs and a sauna. It’s a traditional hot spring, and the most historic one I’ve visited.

The electric bath was so strange that we couldn’t stand it, but we loved having a cold bath outdoors. The place is foreigner-friendly and they don’t mind tattoos. It’s very clean and spacious for an Onsen that’s already 100 years old. We went at 3 pm on a weekday, right when it opened, and it was surprisingly busy. Maybe that was because it was the day after their weekly rest day. There was still enough room to wander around and try the different baths and the sauna. A really great local bath experience, and the people were friendly. 😁

There’s a small, cozy outdoor pool area, and after bathing you can sit in a little lounge or waiting room with vending machines to rehydrate. That’s handy if you finish before your partner. The pools and sauna were nice and hot, and the electric pool was quite a shocker, pun intended. Entry is cheap, and towels and toiletries are provided. Very nice Onsen!
