Guesthouse Engawa

Our host really cared about making guests feel at home. He gave us lots of useful tips, then took us around Gion at night, sharing information and helping us spot geisha. Having a local show us the area was great. The room was cozy and clean, and the guesthouse is easy to reach by bus from Kyoto Station.

The rooms were roomy, with shrines and other sights only a few minutes away on foot. The owners were incredibly hospitable and even offered to show us around the city for free. It’s a traditional guesthouse in a peaceful part of Kyoto, with complimentary laundry and plenty of toiletries. Really lovely people.

It takes a bit of a hike to reach Mr. Li’s place, though my favorite temple was less than five minutes away. He took me and another guest on a tour, where I saw real geishas and learned what the symbols on the houses meant. He also asked if I wanted to visit an onsen and drove me there. There’s all the amenities you need, and laundry is free. His warm, easygoing manner made Kyoto special for me. Thanks for such a memorable stay!

The guesthouse made it easy to meet other guests. We chatted and swapped travel tips, which added a lot to our time in Kyoto. Mr. Li was welcoming throughout, and one highlight was his offer to drive us to a temple ceremony. Our traditional room was spacious, had two beds, and felt comfortable and authentic. Laundry facilities were useful, and the friendly atmosphere came from both the host and fellow travelers.
