Hotel Musse Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi Meitetsu

We had two adjoining rooms, which made things easy with small children. The rooms were clean, and housekeeping was professional. Breakfast was good, with something for everyone. The hotel itself is nice and cozy, right in the middle of Kyoto’s busy area. I’m not sure if it was the city’s main street, but it felt like it, with lots of people around in the daytime and evening. Recommended.

The laundry machines on the 5th and 6th floors are simple to use and cost 500 yen for a larger load. They wash and dry in one go, and you can check progress on your room TV, so there’s no need to hang around in the laundry room. Breakfast had a nice selection, and staff kept everything topped up. The rooms are clean, and we didn’t hear our neighbors at all. There is some street noise from below, but it generally dies down after midnight and stays quiet through at least mid morning. Earplugs block it completely. Convenient location, and I’m very happy we chose this hotel.

If you like partying and don’t need sleep, this hotel may be fine, but I won’t stay again. We were on the 9th floor for 5 days in late December, and people partied on the street every night until 3 or 4 am. The bed was right beside the window, so we heard everything. Shouting, cars screeching past, ambulances and police vehicles were all very loud. Sleeping was extremely difficult. The hotel should make the windows more soundproof. The hotel itself is OK, though the rooms are a bit small. There’s enough space, but the double bed is placed along the wall, which makes getting into it awkward.

Stayed three nights with my wife and absolutely loved it. It’s conveniently located downtown, about a 15-minute walk to the Gion area, with great transport and lots of shopping. We’d definitely book again.
