Kokonoe Machiya

I came to Kyoto alone, and this ended up being my favorite hotel of the whole trip. The place is very clean and welcoming, with a Japanese-style look, in a peaceful neighborhood where it was easy to meet other travelers. It felt like being at home. Toni and his wife are wonderful. Toni and I talked a lot, and he gave me great tips on places to visit around Kyoto. By the end of my stay, he felt like a close friend. I’d recommend this place to solo travelers and other travelers too. Thanks again, Toni, for being such a good friend while I was in Kyoto 😁

The beds were the comfiest I slept in all trip. Toni is such a lovely host and shared tons of information. The house and rooms are amazing, with a great mix of traditional style and modern touches, including Google set up throughout. 10/10, would recommend!

The owners are kind, communicate well, and know Kyoto really well. Ask them what to do, see, or try. I got a warm welcome and they explained the rules clearly. The facilities were very clean, my bed was comfy, and I had a large personal locker. It was one of the highlights of my time in Kyoto, and I’ll stay again next time I’m here.

The guesthouse owner was incredibly helpful and gave me loads of information about the city. The place itself is beautiful, carefully renovated as a traditional Japanese townhouse, with lovely details throughout that made the stay feel special. It is a bit far from everything, though. If you’re fine with walking or taking the bus, I’d still recommend staying here :)
