Santouan is a lovely ryokan for a special stay. The hosts were warm and kind, made us feel at ease right away, and treated us like family. We had fresh, delicious Japanese-style breakfast each morning in the beautiful dining area overlooking the city. The rooms are beautifully appointed and have all the modern comforts for an easy stay, and the view from the ryokan is stunning. It's well placed for visiting Kiyomizu dera and Kodai-ji temples. The center of Kyoto and other attractions are a little far, but that wouldn't put me off. Our four nights there felt magical, and we'd return in a heartbeat.

The walk from the nearest bus stop takes about 10 minutes uphill, but the location has beautiful city views and puts you close to lots of great places to visit. The owners are sweet and helpful, and the hotel has a cute, cozy feel. Breakfast was generous and tasty. I had a great stay. :)

It was too expensive for what you get, and I found it totally unworthy. The path up the hill is steep and exhausting, especially if you're carrying luggage. At night there's nothing around, so it's a poor choice if you want to enjoy the nightlife. Stay away if either of those things matters to you.

This family-run local bed and breakfast feels homey, has great views, and is among the most affordable places in the area. It felt very safe. Highly recommend.
