Luxury Hotel SOWAKA

The way Emin Yalcin looked after us made the stay feel personal and genuinely welcoming. He was attentive, sincere, gracious, and very professional at every turn. Sowaka Kyoto gave us the most beautiful, authentic experience of our time in Japan. From the arrival onward, the calm atmosphere, thoughtful design, and architecture felt closely tied to Kyoto’s spirit. It all had a timeless quality that made the visit unforgettable. We couldn’t have imagined a better experience in Japan, and absolutely have to return and stay here again.

The service was the part that really set this hotel apart. The staff were attentive, used my name, and made me feel as if I had a personal room butler who could help arrange anything I needed. I stayed three nights in January 2026, in a unique property with just 23 rooms, each with its own layout and personality. I also toured three other rooms, and each would make for a different stay. The whole hotel has heated floors, which were especially nice in the cold winter weather, and my room had a fantastic Hinoki wood soaking tub. The attached restaurant served a delicious breakfast, and I had an amazing dinner there too. It even came with personalized chopsticks to take home. The hotel is in the heart of Gion, close to the neighborhood’s history and many sights and shrines. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special, personal experience in Kyoto.

Wendy and the staff were thoughtful and wonderful. The Japanese breakfast was amazing too. From the busy street, you’d never guess what’s tucked inside. A little path opens onto a quiet, luxurious boutique Japanese building and garden. Our traditional-style room kept its wooden frames and tatami beautifully, while also having high-quality, comfortable furniture and a great bathroom.

Room 209 was roomy and modern enough, and the bathroom was a standout, with both a shower and a soaking tub. The hotel is great for sightseeing, but it’s quiet too. The staff made us feel welcome from start to finish. Breakfast was amazing, with both Western and Japanese options. Try a sunrise walk at nearby Yasaka shrine before eating, and don’t miss the sake hour. This was the highlight of our two and a half weeks in Japan.
