We really enjoyed being able to head out and try local restaurants, since they don't serve kaiseki dinners. Back at Genhouin, the attentive staff made everything easy, and the garden views, traditional breakfast, robes, and bath made it feel like a relaxing, authentic ryokan stay. Such a magical break.

The staff made the place feel special, greeting us when we came back at night and seeing us off in the morning. Kyoto's tourist spots felt less appealing after spending time in this dream of a location. A few things to know: there's no restaurant or breakfast, and no bar. It's also not somewhere to socialize with other guests. People whisper here! :-)

Our first ryokan stay was such a peaceful, lovely experience. We were welcomed with tea, and really enjoyed the hot bath, traditional breakfast, and beautiful gardens. Tiger was a wonderful host. We'd absolutely recommend the place and would stay again if we return to Kyoto.

The garden view and the room's design were beautiful, and rainy weather made it especially nice to relax inside in the warmth and take it all in. We stayed one night for my birthday, our first time at a traditional ryokan. I worried the rules might feel like a lot, but the hosts were so welcoming and helpful that it was easy. They prepared a private traditional hot bath for us in the evening, and breakfast was a special spread of small, unusual, delicious dishes. The hospitality and service were top level. 10/10.

A beautiful Japanese guest house with lovely gardens and great service. It made for a really special Kyoto experience.
