Ryokan Sanga

The staff were great, and the cook was especially friendly. The location is very convenient, too. Still, the musty smell in the room and beds put us off, and the food wasn't great, so we skipped breakfast. The rooms were basic and quite small for what we paid. I've stayed in other ryokans with better amenities. It was okay, but the experience didn't feel worth the price. If you're set on a ryokan, I'd look at nearby options first.

A lovely traditional Japanese hotel, and an easy place to get around from in Kyoto. Nishiki Fish Market is about a 5-10 minute walk away. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the price is reasonable if you're after a traditional feel. The floor mats are thin, but that's part of the appeal. I loved my stay and would come back next time I'm in Kyoto. 💜

There are two markets close by, with lots of places to shop and eat. The next station takes a bit of walking to reach, though it wasn't too bad. Service was lovely: the room was cleaned daily, water and tea were free, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Even with limited English, we could get across what we needed. You can leave your luggage there if you arrive before check-in, but the place closes after midnight, so make sure you're back by then. One small tip: once you're at the entrance, use the sliding door on the left. A few people seemed unsure whether it was open when the lights were off. It's a nice spot for a more traditional stay.

The rooms were comfortable and nicely prepared, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I'd definitely come back.
