Ayame-an was a comfortable, well-equipped base for us. The soaking tub was a real treat. The tourist walking area and trains for going farther afield were close, but our block felt homey and was super quiet. Westerners should know the mattresses are firmer than they may be used to. That’s probably the case in places that aren’t western-style hotels.

My family and I just had the best three days in Kyoto, even though we’ve visited several times. The house has a lovely balance of modern and traditional, and the beds were super comfortable. It’s a short walk to Kiyomizu-dera, bus stops, the subway, restaurants, the river and a Lawson convenience store.

It felt much more like home than most hotels, with everything we needed. The place itself is really nice, and the staff were lovely and flexible. We arranged a later-than-usual checkout with them. Just a heads-up for winter: the house gets freezing cold. Turning the air con up to maximum helps, but it takes time to warm up.
