Sumire-an Machiya Holiday House

A lovely house with a really authentic feel. I highly recommend it.

I couldn't find a single thing wrong. Everything was perfect!

The bus stops nearby made getting around the city easy, and Nijo Castle is walkable from here. My family was already saying “Wow!” as soon as we walked in. The renovated traditional townhouses feel modern while still making for a really memorable stay. The bathroom and courtyard were great, the amenities were better than at other hotels I've stayed in, and the morning coffee was delicious. I'd been curious about Machiya Inns & Hotels for ages from seeing it on Instagram, so finally staying there was a treat. They have other properties too, and I'd definitely go back and recommend them to friends.

Getting to unwind in the earthen-floored space right up to checkout was lovely. Sumire-an is about a 10-minute walk from JR Nijo Castle Station, with convenience stores and a shopping street close by, so it was easy to come back and relax after sightseeing. The house keeps the feel of old Japanese architecture while being comfortable to stay in. Downstairs there's a kitchen, wood-floored living room, and tatami room looking onto a courtyard; upstairs are a bedroom and another tatami room, with plenty of space for a large group. I also loved the fragrant cypress bath. Tea, coffee, bottled water, and neatly packed amenities were provided. For longer stays, there's a washing machine and detergent, and use of the machine is free. I'd happily stay here again. I really recommend trying a traditional Kyoto machiya.
