Tsukikusa-an

The location was great, and the house had a kitchen, two washrooms, a bedroom, a living room, two tatami rooms, a small yard, and a washer/dryer. Check-in was at another location, and that could be difficult if you don't know Japanese because the signs were only in Japanese. Google Maps also didn't point to the place quite right.

The bathtub was a highlight for everyone in our group, and we loved the townhouse's tucked-away feel on a quiet street. We even saw some geiko walking nearby around 9pm. We stayed three nights during sakura season, and the location made it easy to get to two public transit lines. The only thing we'd change was the western style room. Its mattresses were stiff, and the pokey springs made it hard to sleep.

Staff were friendly and helpful, and the home mixes traditional character with modern features. The location is ideal for a Kyoto stay. Just be aware the staircase is steep. The western bedroom has two large single beds, like a university residence hall, but you'll work it out.

Kyoto is an amazing city, and when we visit with our guided groups, we enjoy staying in traditional homes.
