I really enjoyed the meals, and there’s a spot to sample five kinds of tea too. The rooms have a traditional layout, with an entryway leading into a spacious Tatami room with a view. The bathroom felt small by Western standards, though it was fine. There’s a lovely garden, and the outdoor rooftop hot spring looks out over the neighborhood. A pleasant place to stay.

The room was roomy for a single, with a few kinds of tea and snacks, drinking water, and chilled cups waiting in the fridge. I did find the toilet too small for a hotel at this price. The public bath and foot bath had great water and temperature, though. After the shuttle dropped me off, someone showed me to the snack area, where I had a refreshing cold treat and warm tea. Then, while reception handled my passport and check-in, the staff member showed me around the first floor and picked out a bathrobe for me. There were lots of colors and sizes.

We found plenty to see on foot in the pretty streets, including lots of statues of different gods. The garden was award-winning, the food was top notch, and breakfast was downright decadent. The staff, room, and baths were just as good. Kasuien Minami felt both traditional and modern, and made our 30th anniversary trip wonderful. The only trouble was wanting to stay one more night!

The grounds were beautiful, the bath was divine, and the food was incredible. I don’t speak any Japanese, but they smoothly arranged for an English speaker to help me at check-in, through dinner, and at checkout. The staff were kind and professional, and I’d absolutely say you get what you pay for here. I had an amazing night at this ryokan. Get the Kaiseki set!!!

After soaking in the good quality hot spring, I liked getting a chilled tea at their stylish tea bar. This is a nice onsen ryokan, and the staff are friendly and well trained.
