Hotel Montagne Matsumoto

The location is great, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable, though the place has a 90s conference hotel feel and seems to cater mainly to business people. I really enjoyed the Japanese breakfast buffet, with lots of choices and healthy food. Parking is available for I think ¥700/day. If your room faces the train station, you’ll hear trains and announcements all day and night, though the windows do a decent job of blocking the sound when shut. Airco is available.

We had a beautiful view of the Japanese Alps from our room, and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is in a quiet area close to Matsumoto Station, and the main spots in town are still walkable. It’s a bit old, but clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The staff were very kind and helpful. It’s also a good base for visiting Kamikochi, Narai-juku, or Hakuba.

The staff were attentive and helpful, and the view of the train station was cool. The hotel was clean, but dated, with things that feel like they’re from the ‘90’s, though the room photos are realistic. It’s within walking distance of the station and the main commercial area. The castle is a good 15 mins away on foot, and it’s not exactly an interesting walk. Paid parking spots are right by the hotel, which was one reason we stayed there.

The rental bicycles were a nice perk, especially compared with what HelloCycling wants to charge for 15 minutes. The west side of the station is much quieter, with less foot traffic and street noise, and trains weren’t frequent enough to bother us. My only minor gripes were that some appliances were small and the desk lamp couldn’t be moved, which was annoying. The bed and bathroom were a good size.
