Eco Dogo - Hostel

Good location near Dogo onsen, and the rooms are separated by gender. But this was my worst hostel stay in Japan, and I've stayed in many. It was one of the dirtiest and least comfortable. My bunk had hair all over it and used contact lenses left by a previous guest. The thin cushion was placed right on the floor, with no bed, and there was nowhere to sit in the room, no chair or bench. The showers were moldy and the sinks were dirty too, so I felt dirtier after bathing. There's no kitchenette or even a water dispenser. Laundry was expensive unless you had a full suitcase load to wash. It was also very noisy, with a cheap facelift and no soundproofing. You could hear everyone in the corridors. The thin pad and dirtiness mean I wouldn't stay again. It's an hour's walk from Matsuyama city station.

For the price, the private room was especially good. We had a spacious, clean room for two with futon beds, and it felt quite private. The bathroom was private too, and the communal showers were clean. It's a lovely place and well located for a first-time tourist. I'd absolutely recommend it.

The hotel is quiet and nicely placed on a side street, within walking distance of the onsen, restaurants and pedestrian streets. Both kinds of rooms we used were spacious, comfortable, clean and well set up. It was full, so halfway through we had to change rooms, switching between dorm beds and a private Japanese-style room.

I booked without looking carefully because there was a discount, and accidentally reserved a bed in the female dorm. When I arrived, they told me about the mistake. I thought they'd let me cancel since it was an honest error on my part, but instead they offered either a private room at twice the price or a cancellation fee equal to the full room cost. I checked and the female dorm still had availability, so they wouldn't have lost another customer because of me. Charging that fee, or at least refusing to meet me halfway, doesn't give a good impression. K would stay away from this place.
