The rooms were nice and had a good view of Dogo Onsen, though they felt a bit old. I also liked having a private onsen. But if you’re after a traditional ryokan stay, this isn’t it. The shared facilities belong to the main Chaharu hotel, which made the experience feel jarring and busy. Breakfast is in its dining room alongside large tour groups, with a noisy atmosphere and a buffet where many dishes were cold. The food was pretty bad, like an airplane or airport lounge meal. The rooftop onsen is also shared with tourists from those groups, and the check-in area fills up with groups and luggage during the day. This doesn’t feel relaxing, and the service and food aren’t at the level I’d expect from a true ryokan.

Our room had two onsens, one in the bathroom and another outdoors. We were in the new building on the top, fifth floor, and had to walk up one flight of stairs. There’s a loft that can fit two more people, kids in particular. Adults would very likely bump their heads on the ceiling. Just keep in mind that breakfast is served in the main building.

A bit pricey, but I’d definitely recommend it to anyone wanting an authentic Japanese experience. The staff were kind and friendly, and the hotel has everything you’d expect from a proper onsen hotel. Dinner was great, and the chef was even willing to change the menu to suit your preferences.

You can take the same hot spring water from Dougo Onsen in your room, and the room itself feels cozy. Each one has different decorations, which makes this onsen hotel pretty unique. It’s right in front of Dougo Onsen.

The location is quite nice, and I liked the bed and the hotel overall. Things are just slow here. Still, I’d recommend it to people looking for a room.
