The price was very reasonable, but I wasn’t impressed by the hostel’s amenities or atmosphere during my two-night stay. Apart from the other person in my dorm, I was by far the youngest guest and the only woman. The place seemed deserted except at mealtimes, and the lounges were always empty. I’d probably only choose it again if I really needed to save money.

Dinner was spectacular for 1,100 yen, home-cooked with a Bachan vibe, lots of different tastes, and really scrumptious. It saved the stay, but I wouldn’t go back. We couldn’t book Matsuyama Youth Hostel online, so a Japanese friend made the reservation because we’d heard they were helpful with the Henro Pilgrimage. They put us foreigners on the fourth floor, even though hardly anyone else seemed to be staying there. The bathrooms were unclean. One bin had an old used tampon in it, was open and had no liner, so we assumed the area hadn’t been cleaned in a while.

It was good and cheap. There were very few people when I stayed, so I got a large room to myself with a private toilet and wash basin. The place is close to the famous Dogo Onsen, where I was able to relax in a nice bath.

The host was very kind and helpful, and the location was good. It was also very reasonably priced. Still, the place didn’t feel very clean and the WiFi was really poor, so I wouldn’t return.

I was really happy with this quaint hostel. The traditional accommodation and breakfast were lovely, and the hospitality was the best part. Very good value for money!
