The inn is quiet and there aren't major sights nearby, and the window view is pleasant enough but not especially striking. I also found the lack of Western-style chairs tiring. Still, as someone who loves old houses and hot springs, I thought it was a perfect fit. The garden was cared for, and the relocated old house gave the place a lovely historic feel. It felt luxurious for what we paid. My daughter enjoyed it too, so I'm glad we came and would like to return. We visited in early September. Our room was the smaller of the two, though the maisonette layout across the first and second floors gave us enough space. The meals were thoughtfully made, but the portions were too large at both dinner and breakfast. There was no open-air bath, but the spring water had a faint sulfur and mall smell and was a high-quality hydrogen sulfide sodium chloride spring. We were very satisfied.

I stayed at "Kamimaki-so" with my parents about 60 years ago. I still remember hearing the Tone River from the window, and walking up to Omine Marsh with my family to fish with my late father. The proprietress's grandfather bought the long-running inn and took over its management in 1966. The current main building was built in 1980 as the family's home. As "Kamimaki-so" aged and deteriorated, it closed and was demolished. They later renovated their home and opened "Ryokan Shoya" in 1986.

The renovated storehouse room, with its hearth, was such a relaxing place to sit. It's a guesthouse that takes only two groups a day, so it felt quiet and restful. The food was delicious, and the proprietress and staff were all attentive and kind. I'd like to come back in another season. The Wi-Fi may be unreliable inside the storehouse, but I found it a great place to read quietly, watch the hearth, or take a break from screens. They don't take credit cards, though PayPay is accepted.

The food was delicious, the hot springs were wonderful, and the renovated storehouse room had a dignified feel. What stood out most was the deep quiet and the unobtrusive hospitality. My husband and I came looking for tranquility in a ryokan and onsen, and this place was exactly right for us. They host only two groups per day, which gave us a real sense of privacy. During our two-day, one-night stay, we didn't run into any other guests. A LEVEL-5 stay for us.

The hot-pot fuel ran out before the food was fully cooked at both meals. At dinner there wasn't enough solid fuel, and breakfast had too little broth as well as too little fuel. In the mountains, I don't think tuna sashimi is needed. I'd have preferred salty pickles to the sweet-and-sour kind. All the rooms are apparently maisonettes, with the toilet downstairs, so it doesn't seem convenient for older guests. There are steps throughout the building, and the food is seasoned too heavily for elderly people as well. This place seems best suited to people with strong legs and backs.
