The host was really kind, and the sashimi was some of the best I’ve ever had. Hard to believe we got such amazing food for such a low price. Definitely a place worth going to.

The food matched what the listing described and was really satisfying. The building has that nostalgic Showa-era feel, and Haraoka Pier is just a three-minute walk away. I visited with my family. The walls are thin, so you have to keep quiet at night. I also wished there’d been a hot water heater or vending machines. 2025.10

The meals were the best part for me. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious, with sashimi that had no fishy taste at all, plus great grilled fish and simmered dishes. I’d come back just for the food. You serve yourself and arrange the dishes, which is nice when you don’t have to worry about serving anyone else. The roads around the inn are narrow and confusing. If you’re not comfortable driving, check Street View first. The parking area is a little way from the inn, but it’s clearly listed on their website. We were shown to a second-floor room. There seemed to be about three rooms up there, with one toilet and two sinks. Our sliding door didn’t lock. The cleaning wasn’t thorough, as other reviews mention. It reminded me of visiting relatives or grandparents when I was a kid, and anyone who grew up in the Showa era may not mind. You make your own bed, and dust gets kicked up, so if you have allergies, wear a mask and ventilate well. The bathroom had two showers and a regular-sized tub. There was visible black mold on the walls, though my own house is similar, so I could tolerate it. For this price, two meals and a shower are pretty cheap. You can order alcohol, but I was too late and the staff had already left the room. There was no call button, and nobody answered when I went to the waiting room for help, so I felt bad and drank what I’d brought. We happened to be the only guests this time. If the rooms were full, noise might depend on who else was staying, and some people might not sleep well. Earplugs or headphones could be useful. I’ve written a lot, but I’d personally stay again.

If you’re after fresh local seafood and warm hospitality, Minshuku Katanashi has both, with generous portions at a fairly reasonable price. The food gets a lot of praise and it’s good value for money. The building is on the old side and doesn’t block much sound. You can easily hear people in the hallway and neighboring rooms, so it may not suit anyone looking for peace and quiet. Still, the homey, close-knit feel is part of its charm as a traditional inn.

Dinner and breakfast were both delicious, and being served in our room let us take our time eating as a family. There was more than my elementary school-aged kids could manage, so I felt a bit bad when they left some behind. After we were shown to the room, we were mostly on our own. Towels, toothbrushes, yukata robes, bath towels, body soap, shampoo, and conditioner were provided. The only drinks available were beer, shochu, and sake. There’s a Welcia near the station where train travelers can buy drinks, but the room has no refrigerator. It had been a while since I’d stayed at a guesthouse. I was fine with it, though my kids had only been to hotels and hot spring inns before. Learning that places like this exist was a good family experience, and we all had fun.
