The food was the highlight, both dinner and breakfast. The servings were generous enough to fill us up, with horse sashimi, real wasabi, fish, pudding, and more. The onsen was also the best we’ve tried in Japan. We had it to ourselves, and it was peaceful, with a forest view, birds chirping, and water dripping in the bath. We parked in the wrong lot by mistake, but the staff moved our car and took us by minibus to the parking lot in the morning. They were cheerful and kind, and happy to help with even small requests. The stay exceeded our expectations. I wish we’d booked more nights, and I’d definitely come back if I stay in Kurokawa.

The baths were clean and well maintained. We enjoyed the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor baths, especially the open-air one with its view of nature. Our reservation included one private onsen session, which we loved. The room was spacious and had a nice view, and both dinner and breakfast were impeccable. We chose Ichinoi because it’s fully tattoo-friendly, which is unusual among the 30 ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen. We stayed for one night just before Christmas. It’s a little away from the town center, making it quiet, while shops and other amenities are still easy to reach.

There’s just one pool for onsen hopping, with no shower or amenities, but it’s open to nature and I enjoyed it. I imagine it would be nice on a starry night. The water has a strong sulfur smell, in a pleasant way.

The public bath was empty when I went, so it felt really quiet and peaceful. Even though the inn is at the edge of the small town, the outdoor onsen felt private and lovely, tucked beside the trees. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the food was delicious. Service was great too. We had an amazing stay and would highly recommend it.

My first outdoor hot spring experience was at Ryokan Ichinoi. It’s close to the town center, and soaking there felt wonderfully private and peaceful.
