I first found Kiya Ryokan because I often travel solo, and it offers guided tours to the gorgeous Mount Mitoku and its world heritage temples even for solo guests. Since then, I’ve come back more than five times with friends and family. It’s my favourite hotel anywhere, and I can’t recommend it enough. The building’s maze-like layout and traditional architecture feel like a time slip. The surrounding town, tucked into misty mountains, has fascinating cultural points of interest dating back hundreds of years. The staff’s incredible hospitality is a big part of what makes the place special. They’re warm and sincere, offer optional guided nature hikes and local cultural activities, and warmly welcome international guests, readily sharing the region’s amazing history and culture. The in-house radium hot springs feel healing and restorative. The gourmet meals are artistically prepared and among the best I’ve had in my life. It’s hard to put my love for Kiya Ryokan and Misasa Hot Springs Town into words. If you want to experience Japanese culture, feel fully welcomed, enjoy wellness tourism, and have an unforgettable adventure, I highly recommend it.

The hospitality was incredible at this small, traditional ryokan in a historic building. The food and baths fell short of five stars.

All the meals were thoughtfully prepared and delicious, and they were served in our room. I was traveling with my husband, who is undergoing cancer treatment, and this inn felt a little different from a typical hot spring place. After an explanation from what I think was a hot spring master, we tried every bath in the inn and soaked several times, at night and again in the morning. We even drank the hot spring water! I hope it helps shrink my husband’s cancer, even a little. I enjoyed chatting with the shuttle bus driver too, and I’d like to visit again. Thank you very much.

The building dates back to the Meiji era, so it’s old, but it’s well maintained and beautifully renovated, with a relaxing retro atmosphere. I came for Misasa Onsen. There’s parking, though it’s about a 3-minute walk away. Several hot springs are on the premises, including two private baths you can use when they’re available. By chance, both were free when I visited, so I got to use them. The radium effects were relaxing. The room, bath, and food were all great, and the food was delicious and seemed creative. The staff were friendly, and I was comfortable from start to finish. Thank you.
