The traditional Japanese bath for men had a big tub, already filled with hot water, so we could soak after showering, which was just what we needed after skiing. There’s also a connecting slope right beside the guesthouse once the resort closes, and the owner drove us to the ski resort in the morning. I’d always stayed in mountain hotels in tourist areas before, so this family-run guesthouse was a first for me, and I had a wonderful time. A kind older woman was there, and the owner and his wife were very welcoming. Breakfast and dinner were included, with delicious, varied food in a very Japanese style. I was very satisfied and hope to return next year.

Getting to Suginohara Ski Resort was easy. The family drives guests to the gondola, and on the way back there’s a connecting path straight into the guesthouse grounds. They really understand skiers and go out of their way to help. The family has run this lively, old-fashioned place for two generations, and their daughter was a Nagano Olympic athlete. The building is old, and the toilet layout is a bit complicated because of an extension, though there is a Western-style toilet. Amenities aren’t provided, so bring your own, and you’ll need to lay out your own futon. There’s a drying rack built into the stove that’s great for wet clothes. Meals are generous, and for the price I kept thinking, “This much food?” It’s a very comfortable place, and I’d definitely stay again.

I stayed from January 7 to 8, 2023, and really liked the warm, homey feel. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and generous, so I left very satisfied. The gondola is a bit far to walk, but they’ll drive you there. The nearest ski lift is about a 5-10 minute walk.
