Those two nights went by much too fast. After three years of backpacking around the world, this is the cosiest hostel I’ve stayed in, and it really did feel like home. The building is traditional and small, with a lived-in feel rather than a modern look, but it has what you need. In the evenings, people gather in the living room and it feels like spending time with family. The staff welcomed me with hot tea and suggested places that suited my interests. They were kind, caring, and genuinely interested in making my stay special. Sunday morning’s potluck breakfast was a lovely chance to meet people and share local food. I wish I’d stayed a week. Such a beautiful place.

I was travelling alone and found it easy to chat with the incredibly welcoming staff at 1166 backpackers. Their tips for places to see around the area were great, too. There’s a cosy feel to the place, and they put out fresh coffee and tea each morning. I’ll definitely come back when I’m in the Nagano region again.

We really didn’t want to leave this welcoming hostel. The staff were friendly, attentive, well organized, and full of useful advice. We had a wonderful stay and would happily book here again if we return to Nagano. Thanks for everything ❤️

The hosts’ warmth and kindness made this place special for me, and I hope I get to come back someday. I felt right at home in both the living areas and the work spaces, and the rooms were wonderfully cosy. It’s my favourite place I’ve ever stayed.

1166 Backpackers has a genuine, cosy feel. The staff were a huge help, whether we needed to plan a day trip or figure out the bus ticket system. We’d gladly recommend it to backpackers and anyone exploring Nagano.
