The dinner was tasty, and the young waitress serving us was attentive. Our room was spacious and having a toilet in it was a plus for a traditional ryokan. Still, the facilities showed their age. The sink was cracked and heavily stained, and the fluorescent light over the toilet flickered now and then at night, which felt unsettling. After dinner, we looked at the Google reviews and saw someone had reported the same cracked sink a year earlier, so it seems the problem was still there. We came to Togakushi for the second time and chose this ryokan because of its high Google rating and positive reviews. We knew the building was old, having stayed in older ryokan before, and adjusted our expectations. Check-in was smooth but felt procedural, without much warmth in the hospitality. It was an okay stay in some respects, but for us it fell short of what a 4.7 rating suggested.

We had a lovely twin room in this beautiful 200-year-old Ryokan, now run by the host's family in its sixth generation. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious Japanese meals. The host was friendly and helped with everything we needed. For our snowy walk to the shrine, he even lent us boots and a bear bell. Thanks again for the hospitality.

The family who run the place are so kind and welcoming, and they speak good English. The traditional meals were very nice. I’d recommend booking both dinner and breakfast, since the restaurants in the area close around 3 pm. Our room was large and traditional, with a private toilet but no bath or shower, and a traditional heater table. It’s very close to the path to the main shrine, about a 1.5-hour walk there, and the walk is lovely. Very recommended.

The host managed to arrange dinner and breakfast for me at the last minute, and both were among the best meals I had on my trip to Japan. The rooms are cozy and have a traditional feel. Such warm hospitality. If you’re staying in Nagano, definitely spend at least one night here.

The host was so welcoming and friendly. We loved the fresh, tasty traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast they prepared for us. The bathroom and toilets are shared, but very clean, and the bus stop is only a two-minute walk away. We’d love to return.
