The meal really lived up to the ryokan’s reputation for food. I tried yamame trout sashimi for the first time, and it was translucent, a little sweet, and delicious. The Hida beef hot pot used meat from a female cow, which I was told is more tender and tasty. The wild vegetable tempura was crisp, and despite eating a lot I didn’t feel bloated. Even the miso soup was great. When I asked where the miso came from, they said a nearby koji shop made it, so I went straight over to buy some.

The room was in a different building from the dining room. The building was old, but seemed very clean. Finding the place may be tricky the first time, since you have to turn off the main street onto a narrow road through a residential area. I came for the ayu dishes and was very satisfied with all the different preparations. Grilled ayu is my favorite, and I got to enjoy two of them. I stayed on a weekday and was the only guest, but they still served such carefully prepared food.
We stopped in for lunch, and my family was very happy with the wild sweetfish. We didn’t stay the night, so I can’t say how the rooms are, but we appreciated the restaurant’s hospitality.
We visited over the long weekend in mid-October. A prefectural resident discount was available then, and since we were looking for somewhere to travel, the description of a “ryokan” specializing in cuisine caught my eye. The reviews looked good, so I booked. I got a little lost, but reached the inn in time for check-in. The turn off the main road is narrow, so take care. If you can, the wider road along the embankment is easier. Dinner had the abundance of ayu I’d hoped for, and it was all delicious. We had roe-bearing ayu grilled with salt, sweet simmered ayu, ayu in Nanban sauce, mushroom rice, Hida beef grilled on magnolia leaves, and vegetable and shrimp tempura. There was so much that my partner couldn’t finish, so I ended up eating it all. The food was excellent, and we were very satisfied. Since food matters a lot to us when we travel, it was just what we wanted. With the prefectural discount, the value was excellent. The room was in a separate building and quiet, but it had an older Showa-era feel. Perhaps the focus is on the cuisine. Since the food was the main draw and we enjoyed it so much, that didn’t bother us much. Finding what looked like a toothbrush from a previous guest left in the bathroom was a bit startling. We went to a nearby hot spring, so I can’t comment on the inn’s bath. Thank you!
I stayed in the first half of August and came away completely full. The meal was incredibly tasty, with four sweetfish preparations, shrimp and scallop sashimi, beef hot pot, fried shrimp and squid, then rice, miso soup, and fruit. The room had a Showa-era feel, with its own bathroom and toilet. The innkeeper's wife and daughter were so kind and welcoming. Thank you. I'd like to come back.
