The food is excellent. It’s called creative Western cooking, though it might be more of a Japanese-Western fusion, and it paired well with wine. I’d like to come back when I visit Toshodaiji Temple again. We stayed in a detached home that had been converted into a guesthouse. Rice fields were in front, with a school behind them, so there wasn’t much of a distant view. I heard the school was Sanma Akashiya’s alma mater. The house is in a residential neighborhood right beside Toshodaiji Temple and Yakushiji Temple. The streets are narrow, but the distances between places are lovely.

The meals were delicious and served on beautiful dishes. If you prefer smaller portions, you can talk it over with the proprietress. This inn offers warm hospitality and a peaceful place to unwind and get some time to yourself. Just keep in mind that the bath facilities are guesthouse-level, not like a hot spring.

I came by bike during a tour over Golden Week in 2011. After touring the Chugoku region, I wanted to spend time in Nara somewhere that would also be a sightseeing destination. The prices seemed reasonable, and the food sounded good, so I booked. It was dark when I arrived, and finding the place was difficult at first. The room was average, but dinner was a real treat. It was like a traditional kaiseki meal, the sort of thing I wouldn’t usually eat, and the stylish atmosphere made the whole dinner especially enjoyable. I’d stay here again next time I’m in Nara.

My husband and I were already talking about coming back as soon as we checked out. The proprietress makes creative French food that’s genuinely impressive. You can taste how much care and effort goes into it. They also serve diners who aren’t staying overnight, so I recommend stopping by if you’re in Nara.

We went as a couple specifically to eat, and the whole meal, from the appetizers through dessert, was unforgettable even years later. The chilled white peach soup was a revelation. I was also amazed by the hojicha ice cream dessert. I’ve tried it at other restaurants since, but four years later, I still haven’t found one that beats this.
