Super Hotel Niigata

Of the three Super hotels we’ve stayed at while traveling in Japan, this one was easily our least favorite. We usually choose Super hotel for the value and location. Maybe the small city means the hotel feels more budget-conscious and has fewer amenities, though I’m not sure. It’s about a 10-15 minute walk from Niigata station. With bags or a suitcase it may take longer, since the street isn’t fully concrete. The room was standard for Super hotel, and our one large suitcase and two small ones fit fine. As at other Super hotels, pillows, pyjamas, and amenities were free, but the body sponge was very rough, like a dish sponge. There’s no public bath. Free breakfast ran from 6:30 to 8:30 on weekdays and until 9 on weekends. We were told to come early because they might start clearing it before the stated end time if no guests were left, which seemed very strange. I came down early to avoid that. One woman handled breakfast, and over the weekend it got busy, so guests had to wait for tables and for food to be replenished. Alcoholic drinks were free from 5 to 8 pm, and it was interesting to see local brands. Non-alcoholic drinks were available at breakfast and from 3 to 8 pm, but the soft drink selection was limited and we didn’t like the coffee.
