We loved this peaceful, nicely decorated place in Nikko. The owners were welcoming and very kind, and they speak perfect English. They arranged breakfast around our dietary restrictions, and it was great. The onsens and bath were lovely, too. They also suggested places to visit and eat. The house is close to Nikko’s tourist sights, but far enough out to enjoy the mountains and nature walks.

The room was beautiful and comfortable, and the onsen was excellent after a day out exploring. Our hosts at The Gableview Forest Inn in Nikko were exceptionally friendly and attentive, and made us feel welcome the whole time. Breakfast was carefully prepared and delicious. Dinner needs to be ordered several days ahead. Elizabeth sometimes gave us a ride to the station, which was a lovely gesture. Otherwise, taxis to and from the inn cost around 1300 to 1400 yen each way. It was a cozy, memorable stay in a peaceful forest setting.

The biggest shrimp I’ve ever seen was part of a delicious dinner, even though I’m not usually much of a shrimp fan. Props to the chef! After dinner, we’d enjoyed some onsen time. The area isn’t very big, so if many guests are staying, you’ll need to plan around it. Having the space to ourselves for a relaxing soak was a real plus. We stayed one night with a few friends during a short trip to Nikko, arriving after about half a day of sightseeing. It was a welcome chance to rest. Elisabeth, our lovely innkeeper, explained everything kindly and shared cultural and local tips, plus suggestions for places to see and go. The inn is a little older, but very clean and well maintained, with working facilities and charming decorations throughout. On a short walk, we went down to the nearby river, saw wild deer foraging, and heard wild monkeys making noises in the forest. The cozy feel and the warm atmosphere Elisabeth created made it feel like visiting my favorite auntie’s cabin, rather than staying at a cheap place. If you like nature, quiet evenings, great food, and a private onsen experience, this place could be just what you’re looking for.

After a day exploring Nikko Center, this was a lovely place to rest and recharge. Dinner felt like private dining, with the chef preparing every dish carefully and skillfully. The mushroom soup and unagi were out of this world, and the mix of Western and Japanese dishes worked so well together. Thank you, Satoshi, for making it our best meal in Nikko, and Liz for the warm, personal welcome.

Liz and Satoshi made us feel right at home, sharing plenty of stories and recommendations. The inn sits tucked into the forest, a short taxi ride from town, and they were happy to drive us into town in the mornings. It was comfortable and clean, with lovely furniture and artwork. We had generous homemade breakfasts and dinners, and the best part was being able to relax at the end of the day in one of the two private onsens, including one overlooking the forest. Such a cosy, relaxing place to stay.
