Inn the Mist

The owner clearly loves dogs and was so kind to mine. We had a nice time chatting, and the quiet atmosphere helped us relax since they only take two groups a day. I’d heard the food was good, and it lived up to that: each dish was thoughtfully made, from the homemade salmon marinade to the hot and cold dishes served at the right temperature. The ingredients weren’t especially fancy, but everything felt prepared with care. The only letdown was that the baths weren’t hot springs. Still, it’s a pension worth staying at, and I’d like to return if I get the chance. I stayed with my small dog.

It had been 16 years since my last stay, and I came back after hearing the inn now welcomes dogs. The place still has the same lovely food, service, and facilities I remembered. There are plenty of thoughtful dog amenities, and the owners’ care for guests shows in all the little details. They lend carts for meals, so you can eat peacefully, and dogs can come into the changing room, though not the bath itself. They only host two groups a day, which makes it very quiet. My dog is usually restless overnight when we travel, but slept soundly here. It was a wonderful stay and felt well worth the price.

Our dog had a great time sniffing around the courtyard, and we enjoyed the private bath and massage chair. The owners were so kind, and it was lovely talking with them. The room had all sorts of dog supplies: a bed, toilet, brush, towels, purse, food bowls, and a dog diaper. They even lent us a stroller for the dining area. We knew supplies would be provided, but didn’t expect such a complete setup. Since this was our first trip with our dog, we brought a lot, though next time we’ll probably just pack the usual food and treats. The food was every bit as delicious as the reviews said. The chicken broth rice porridge at the start of the meal was especially good, warm and gentle on the stomach. All the food was delicious, and I’d recommend the massage chair too. You need to reserve it, like the bath, and there are set times, but it was just what our tired bodies needed after a day out. We stayed during Golden Week on a girls’ trip. The room was cute and roomy enough for two, and the gas heater kept us comfortable on a chilly day below 10 degrees. It was my first pension-style inn, and the entrance felt like visiting a relative’s vacation home. There’s parking for about three cars at the back. Yukata are provided, as are slippers, but you have to walk outside to reach the bath and massage chair, so bring lounge clothes that stay on securely. Breakfast starts at 8:00, and they couldn’t arrange an earlier time. Otherwise, it’s a comfortable, lovely inn, and I can see why people return.
