Kamenoi Hotel Okunikko

A great base for visiting Nikko and Yumoto Onsen. The Japanese bed was set up properly, and the meals, especially dinner, were splendid. There’s a sulfur onsen, a laundry area, massage chairs, and two table tennis tables. Superb! I’ll come back next time I visit Nikko. Tqvm KAMENOI hotel staff!!

The surrounding area is gorgeous and you can get there by bus, though the hotel is a long way out and we were a bit disappointed given the distance. I liked trying the sulphuric onsen, but felt I needed another shower afterwards. I used the all-you-can-eat-and-drink buffet, while my mom didn’t like the food quality. We were also disappointed there was no private bath or even a shower option. The building felt intolerably cold to my mom, and she couldn’t sleep well. It might suit someone looking for an affordable, rustic stay.

The private bathtub and hotel onsen were amazing. We saw deer while bathing and relaxing at night, and the autumn leaves made the scene especially lovely. The food was nice, and the restaurant staff were great. Some of the male front desk receptionists seemed a bit moody. It takes a while to get there, since the location is deep in Nikko.

The hotel is opposite a bus stop, which is convenient, and there’s a lake and green mountains for a pretty view. Friendly deer wandered in front of the hotel. We booked a room package with dinner and breakfast buffet, which was convenient after a long day around Nikko. The food was decent with lots of variety, though the English translations didn’t explain much. It seems the recent renovation only covered the lobby, as the room looked old. The room choices are a western mattress room without a bathroom, or a Japanese tatami floor room with a bathroom. We had a three-bed western room, with a Doraemon closet that looked a little creepy. We enjoyed our stay, the onsen, and the free massage chair. Try the onsen after dinner and again at 5 am.
