The room was clean and looked presentable, and the bathroom was as pictured. But we went in November, and the bathroom was out on a deck with no heat, so showering in the freezing cold was miserable. The windows in our room were dirty and blocked the lovely view advertised, even though the lounge windows were clean. There were no blinds either, so dawn light woke us up. The air conditioning was as loud as a jet engine, and we had to leave it off at night to get any sleep. We’d taken a chance on this traditional Japanese hotel after reading the reviews. We got floor bedding, which wasn’t the experience we expected, though that was our mistake, and the pillows were terrible. Each night we had to move the table and chairs to lay out the bedding. We didn’t use the onsen bath, which didn’t look very clean to us, and the bath towels were very thin. Staff had limited English and weren’t helpful when we asked what was on the breakfast menu. For Western tourists, I’d suggest finding somewhere else with a proper bed and bathing area.

The rooms are well kept, the bathrooms are clean, and the staff are friendly and courteous. It’s a great place to enjoy a hot bath privately in your room or in the public area outside. I’d bring my whole family here, or come with friends and spend a couple of days exploring the Nikko area.

The location is handy for the temples and shrines, as well as Shinkyo Bridge and the northwest end of town. There’s also a nearby bus stop for Kegon falls and the ropeway. Staff were helpful and knew some English. The Japanese-style dinner and breakfast were elaborate. We had a Superior Room, with a lovely amount of space, western-style beds, and a tatami lounge area that could be screened off with sliding panels. The beds were comfortable, with two pillows per person, and there was a large safe with a key lock. The bathroom was lovely, with twin basins, a private shower, and a hot onsen bath on a private balcony. Aircon was a little unreliable, but worked after some fiddling, and opening the windows a bit helped. It was quiet even with them open, just the soothing river sound. The coffee machine instructions were only in Japanese, and Google Translate didn’t explain them very well. I had to find English instructions online and on YouTube. My only small gripe was that there were no power outlets by the beds to charge a phone.

The Toshogu Shrine is right around the corner, and there’s a free shuttle you can book back to the train station, which was very convenient. We had a great time here, with a lovely room and an amazing view over the river and mountains. They also prepared vegan food for us. I highly recommend this hotel for a stay in Nikko! :)

We loved the thoughtful service at Tsurukame Daikichi and really appreciated how accommodating the staff were. At night, they make your bed while you’re enjoying the chef’s seven-course dinner. In the morning, you can choose which grilled fish you’d like, served with some delicious appetizers. The fruit jam and yoghurt were among my favorite parts of breakfast. It’s a traditional Japanese ryokan in the beautiful town of Nikko, with wonderful food and service. They provide a yukata in your size, and it was very comfortable to wear. What a pleasant, beautiful stay. We’ll come back someday. ❤️
