Yamadaya Ryokan

We were a larger group, and this clean, homely ryokan suited us well. The facilities are shared, which didn't bother me, and there is a small on-site onsen that was great after a day in the snow. It felt quite central too, just a short walk from the main sights, including the ski slopes. I'd definitely recommend it.

Yamadaya Ryokan has cafes and markets nearby, which is handy when you want a break. The inn itself is quiet and soothing, with a nostalgic feel. There are cute figures and posters around, and vivariums the owners look after greet you when you come in. The rooms aren't luxurious, despite what some people seem to expect, but I thought they were a decent size compared with some small traditional Japanese rooms. They were calm and easy to relax in, and the electric blankets were really useful. The owners are kind. They have a little restaurant in a corner of the building and bring things like fruit to your room, so you don't have to run into other guests. There's a small onsen downstairs that's always hot, a nice break from the cold. Honestly, it isn't as bad as some reviews make out. People may be hoping for a more luxurious room, but the owners put in a lot of effort.

The food was delicious and full of flavor while still feeling healthy and balanced. I've stayed at newer, nicer, more modern ryokans, but those meals don't compare with what I just ate here. I brought along two very energetic young girls, and it was a good chance to show them that warm water, bedding, and heat aren't things everyone can simply take for granted. The building and facilities are old, but the hosts' kindness and impeccable service more than made up for that. The small number of reviews doesn't reflect how good this authentic traditional Ryokan is. Highly recommend Yamadaya Ryokan!

It's the landlady and owner who really make this guesthouse-style inn special. The building has a fun maze-like layout, and even the toilet door's glass and tiles have that lovely Showa-era atmosphere. I hope the place is preserved for the future. I'm grateful they arranged two rooms for us, including one with dining in the room. The bath has a constant flow of hot water, of course. I recommend staying here.
