The onsen downstairs was empty whenever we went, and having one right in the ryokan made it easy to relax after skiing without going anywhere. The mountain is only about a three-minute walk away. We also tried the baths around town, but really enjoyed the slower, more local feel here. Lots of the other places we passed seemed geared toward tourists. This is a very traditional ryokan. The owner and his son were unbelievably kind, always smiling and laughing with us, and went out of their way to help more than once. We were unsure at first because of some negative reviews, but after staying here we don't understand them. It was one of the most authentic experiences of our Japan trip. It's hard to judge when booking from abroad, but I'd absolutely recommend it.

The owner was so funny and kind, and everyone was eager to help. Our room was clean, roomy, and nice. There's a bath in the hotel, and the place is very close to a slope. We had a great time here and I'd recommend staying.

The staff were lovely. They don't speak English, but they used a voice translator to crack dad jokes. The traditional room was comfortable, the futons were good, and the heater worked really well. The shower and bathroom areas were clean and thoughtfully set up. There's storage for ski and snowboard gear, plus a separate heated room for boots, clothes, gloves, and the rest. The ski lift is just a few minutes on foot, while the town's onsens and restaurants are about 10-15 minutes away. Bring coins for the vending machines and cash for local tax, 150 yen per person per night. They kindly hauled all our ski bags to the bus stop at the end of our stay. One of our friends left a passport in the room, and they even came back for it. I'd absolutely recommend this place.

We ended up having a great stay. The older male staff member and the younger one were both very helpful whenever we needed anything. Before we arrived, I was a little concerned by the bad reviews and the somewhat unfriendly response when I called with a few questions. It's an easy 15-minute walk to the main area of Nozawa Onsen. There are also a good bakery, eateries, and an onsen just a few minutes away.

The food was great, with plenty of variety at breakfast, and the location made it easy to walk to the main part of town. The host was an amazing, welcoming person who went above and beyond. Whatever we needed, they helped us out. I couldn't recommend this place more!
