After confirming our booking by phone the night before, the female owner cancelled it when we arrived and told us to leave, saying she couldn’t accept us. I’d never had such awful treatment at a hotel in Japan. She was angry and manic, and I felt she was racist. We suddenly had nowhere to stay, no food, and no plan. The peninsula is isolated and difficult to book, especially over a long weekend. We’re hobby cyclists and were exhausted after riding all day. At sunset, the last thing we wanted was to start searching for another hotel. Poor and shameful service. Please stay away from this horrible establishment.

This is a Japanese-style ryokan, with tatami, futons, low tables, and legless chairs. The ofuro bath has a lovely sea view, and the food may be the best I’ve ever had at a ryokan. The woman who served us was very friendly and spoke English well. The one drawback I noticed is that it’s two storeys up with no elevator. If stairs are a problem, this place isn’t for you.

There isn’t much around besides the sea, which makes this a nice place to unwind. I’ve visited Oga many times, but this was my first stay here. The room had been renovated and was very clean. Dinner came to my room, though it took a while to get ready. A variety of dishes arrived and I ended up full. I’d stay here again if I get the chance.

There’s little here besides the sea and mountains, so it’s a very relaxing place to stay. The meals are packed with seafood, and the staff were incredibly kind, serving us while sweating, which we really appreciated. It felt like a place full of genuine warmth, rather than the kind of service you’d get at a city hotel. We stayed with guests from out of town. There are lots of stairs and steps in the building, and the dining room has no chairs, so it would be hard for anyone with mobility issues.
