The breakfast set was very satisfying, so I recommend booking with breakfast. The host had also printed notices in English and Korean for guests like us who don’t speak Japanese, which made it easy to use the ryokan. Their kindness really came through, and the cottages were more comfortable than I expected, with lots of attention to detail. I visited in early December of 22. Kotenjin is about a 15-minute drive from downtown Oguni(Oguni Town), and all the rooms are private cottages. The big appeal is the natural hot spring that can be used privately, but the facility broke just before our visit, so we couldn’t use it. I expect it has probably been repaired by now. The host emailed us beforehand to apologize and explain the problem, then offered either a free cancellation or a significant discount if we stayed. The discount was more than I expected. I was disappointed, but kept the booking because I thought the ryokan would still have good facilities without the hot spring. I’d really like to return on another trip to Fukuoka. One tip for visitors: the road to the ryokan is a mountain road without streetlights, as is common around Aso, so in winter I recommend arriving before sunset. It’s also a fair distance from downtown, so bring any supplies or food you need. Cooking isn’t allowed, but coffee pots and microwaves are available.

I've traveled around Japan a lot, and this has been my favorite ryokan so far. The owner's kindness meant a lot, and staying here felt like a treat for both mind and body. When I come back to Japan, this is the main reason I'll return. Thank you.

The owners, a couple, were very kind, and breakfast was delicious, especially the homemade soup. I even bought bread and Dusseldorf ham on my way home. We visited in June, and the fresh green views from the bedroom, bath ♨️, and terrace were amazing. The open-air bath was lovely too. Maybe it was the season or the altitude, but we could see fireflies while bathing. In the green season, the inn is a great place for forest bathing. I think that sound we heard was the sky.

We had a beautiful view from the bath during our wedding anniversary stay at Kaze no Terrace Kotenjin. We’d been curious about this place for a while, and it was our first visit. The spring water smelled metallic and a bit like hydrogen sulfide, and felt like a real hot spring. Tiny bubbles were visible in the water, and it felt as if it was freezing into my body. It also seems to contain radon. On a clear evening the sunset is lovely, and the night sky fills with stars. In the morning we could hear birds singing. There are binoculars for birdwatchers, so this must be a great spot for them. It can’t be easy for the couple to manage three separate cottages, but I hope they keep it up. We’d like to stay again when we get the chance.

The service was excellent, just as the reviews said, and the hot springs felt soothing on the skin. We had such a great, relaxing time. There are three buildings and lots of repeat guests, so it can be hard to book, but it’s well worth it.
