What made our stay at PawPaw stand out most was the owner. He lent my partner and me two bicycles so we could go to dinner, then drove us to the port the next morning when we were running late. He was generous, easy to approach, and kept in touch by phone. He speaks some English, and I imagine Japanese speakers could have even richer conversations with him. The guesthouse sits on a hill among pawpaw and persimmon trees, in a quiet area with homes and harbor-side industry. It’s a 15-20 minute easy walk from the ferry and about five minutes from the bus. Our traditional, simple room was comfortable and peaceful, and the shared bathroom was clean, private, and had nice hot water. We loved our one-night visit in late October 2025. If you want a homier, quieter place and can plan around the distance from Onomichi City, I’d recommend PawPaw.

We had a fantastic few days here. The hosts helped us figure out what to see nearby, and they were so welcoming and kind, taking care of every request. We rented two good bikes from the guesthouse for a fair price and did a 50 km ride without any trouble at all. This is the best guesthouse I’ve ever stayed in, and I’d recommend “Guesthouse Onomichi Powpow” to anyone, any time. Thanks for such a lovely visit. We hope to come back! Love from Denmark 🇩🇰🇯🇵

We had a terrific view from the house, and the accommodation was both clean and lovely. The host was incredibly gracious: he made us delicious ramen, then insisted on washing the dishes himself. He also rented us bikes that worked perfectly for half what nearby rental shops were charging. There’s a bus stop just a few steps away for getting into downtown onomichi, and the place is especially convenient if you’re planning to ride the Shimanami Kaido. I can’t recommend it enough.

Getting there can be a little tricky, but I’d still recommend staying here. The hosts were so nice and did everything they could to make me comfortable. My room was a traditional Japanese one with tatami flooring and a futon. The bathroom and shower are shared, though very clean.

The three of us arrived at night and were greeted so warmly by our hosts. The next morning they even drove us to the bike rental shop, which was a huge help. Our room was clean, we slept really well, and we’d definitely recommend staying here.
