HOTEL THE FLAG Shinsaibashi

Breakfast was fresh, had plenty of choices, and was reasonably priced. I’ve stayed in just two hotels in Japan, and although the other one in Shinjuku’s business district was very nice, Hotel The Flag was better. I felt safe walking to and from the hotel, and it was an easy walk to shopping, sightseeing, and train stations. The area is quiet, though it can get loud outside on weekend nights. Inside the hotel, I didn’t hear it. The room and bathroom were clean and a good size for the price, and they cleaned when requested. The guest lounge stayed clean whatever time I went there. It had a washer and dryer, plus unlimited free coffee, tea, and water. I especially appreciated the complimentary water bottle, which saved me from buying one every day, and the recycling setup for our rubbish. I hadn’t expected so many amenities. The staff were great from the first day on, always ready to help or answer questions. I booked a bit nervously because the hotel wasn’t on what I considered the main street, but I was impressed as soon as the entrance opened. The staff, amenities, and cleanliness really helped us feel comfortable.

A couple of things to plan around: I wasn’t offered early check-in or a late checkout, though I’m not sure if that was just the week I visited. Neither mattered much to me, but if it matters to you, consider reserving an extra day. There’s also no gym or fitness room. The daily breakfast buffet was good and had a nice variety. If it isn’t part of your room rate, you can add it each morning for 2,000 yen, about $12 USD. Staff were welcoming and quick to respond when we asked for an iron, ironing board, and extra pillows. The location was great too, with a couple of subway entrances, restaurants, and lots of shopping within a short walk, less than five minutes.

The staff’s care really stood out. I injured my ankle during the trip, and when they noticed, they offered a wheelchair and lent me crutches. They checked on me regularly afterward, which I appreciated a lot. Everyone spoke excellent English and was approachable, helping with directions, recommendations, and local food suggestions. We arrived for breakfast at 10:00, thinking it ended at 10:30, and the team kindly let us in rather than turning us away or making us feel rushed. The hotel is well located for Shinsaibashi Shopping Street and Dotonbori, with popular local eateries just 1-2 minutes away. It also partners with a same-day luggage delivery service to Kyoto, which made changing cities hassle-free. There’s a dedicated vehicle drop-off area, so loading and unloading bags was comfortable and unhurried. Our room was spacious, clean, modern, and well maintained, with a practical design. Only part of the floor was carpeted, which felt more hygienic while still being comfortable. The Dyson hair dryer was a thoughtful amenity, and the hotel felt sophisticated and carefully designed. We also liked the magnetic room service and "Do Not Disturb" signs that attach neatly to the door. Breakfast had a good range of Japanese and international choices for the whole family. The Flag Shinsaibashi made for a wonderful stay, with comfortable rooms, helpful touches, a great location, and warm service. We’d happily stay again in Osaka.

Free coffee is available around the clock, and it’s as good as a cafe’s. The shower was lovely, and the staff were friendly and very helpful. Great location, with all the amenities we needed. If you’re a couple, I’d strongly suggest booking a room with a double bed. I’ll stay here again next time I’m back.
